Department of Clinical Microbiology and the Cystic Fibrosis Center, University Hospital (Rigshospitalet) and Medical School, Institute of Immunology and Microbiology, University of Copenhagen

RESPIRE3 European fellowship / RESPIRE3 Global fellowship (return phase only)

The Cystic Fibrosis Center (CF) cares for 320 Cystic Fibrosis patients. The research is focused on the chronic lung infection and our results are recommended for diagnosis and treatment of CF patients world-wide. The center director (T. Pressler) and the head of the children-section of the center (M. Skov) have both done their theses on diagnostic methods (ELISA tests) in my laboratory. We have have been active in CF research since 1970. I have a large research group working on biofilm infection notably in CF patients. My major contribution is diagnosis, pathogenesis, prophylaxis and treatment of chronic infections in CF patients including mycobacteria. I have initiated and supervised the work of young scientists (e.g. Tavs Qvist, Cecilie Ravnsholt) in this area where we have developed diagnostic ELISA tests for early diagnosis of infected – subclinical or clinical – CF patients. We have shown that M. abscessus is a biofilm growing bacteria in CF and that the antibody response comes before sputum becomes culture positive – like in subclinical M. tuberculosis patients. This may open a window of opportunity for early successful treatment like in M. tuberculosis patients. I have supervised Renan Mauch's PhD work and he has worked twice
