National Koranyi Institute for Pulmonology is the comprehensive centre for pulmonary diseases including lung cancer providing the widest range of in-patient and out-patient services in Hungary.

Scope of its health care covers - among others - asthma, COPD, interstitial pulmonary diseases, cystic fibrosis. It also serves as national centre for rare pulmonary conditions. The institute takes part in the graduate and postgraduate training of students of national medical universities. Its aim – beside treatment and education – basic, translational, clinical research in pulmonology in cooperation with national and international institutes (Department of Biomedical Engineering Lund University, Surgical Research Laboratories Dept. of Surgery Medical University of Vienna, Semmelweis University Dept. of Pulmonology, Dept. of Pathology , Eötvös Loránd University, National Oncological Institute, etc.).

International Experience

The institute provided skill training in the ERS School Course on 'Monitoring of Airway Diseases'. In collaborative programmes we had short visits from different medical disciplines. From January 2017 a post-doctoral fellow from Japanese university will work at the institute for 3 months.

Research infrastructure

Research projects of departments with outstanding results are funded by international grants (EUREKA, Norwegian Grant) and national grants (OTKA, Széchenyi project - quitting smoking). The institute has participated in EU-FP7 sponsored research collaborations such as EvA (2009-2011) and AirPROM (2012-2016). Research fields: lung cancer, exhaled and sputum biomarkers, asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, lung transplantation, chronic allograft rejection, pulmonary haemodynamics, exercise tolerance, pulmonary rehabilitation. Beside the availability of infrastructure for the non-invasive assessments of airway diseases, a recruitment of patients with specific lung conditions for the collection of cross sectional or longitudinal clinical samples can also be organized. Exhaled biomarkers can be detected using an electronic nose, horizontal and vertical electrophoresis, conventional and real time PCR, cell culturing, western blot, immunohistochemistry, ELISA, mouse models with thorough expertise and pyrosequencing capacity is also available. Methods are supported by Class 2 Biosafety cabinets, microtome, Nanodrop equipments. In the institute 2 researchers possess DSc and 20 researchers possess PhD degree.
