The ERS Lung Cancer Gold Medal grants €50,000 to a researcher who has made an outstanding contribution in the field of lung cancer and who is currently pursuing an active research project in lung cancer. This prize is financially supported by the European Respiratory Society.
Professor Arnaud Scherpereel
Arnaud Scherpereel (MD, PhD) has been Professor of Respiratory Medicine and Head of the Pulmonary and Thoracic Oncology Department in Lille University Hospital (CHU), France for eleven years.
He routinely cares for all types of respiratory patients, but has a special interest in thoracic oncology and pleural diseases, including malignant pleural mesothelioma. He coordinates the French National network of expert clinical centres for MPM.
Prof. Scherpereel is highly involved in education at the local and national levels, serving as assistant of the Dean of Lille Medical School and current President of the French National College of Respiratory Medicine. Among the European Respiratory Society, he has had several positions: Thoracic Oncology Assembly Group Chair, and then Secretary; and as ERS Chair of two European Task Forces.
He belongs to many Scientific Boards including the IFCT, SPLF, ELCWP, IASLC, and iMig (President-elect, 2018). His main translational research topics include tumour angiogenesis, immunology and innovative anti-tumour treatments (cell therapy, PDT), and non-invasive tools for lung cancer or MPM screening or early diagnosis (blood/exhaled breath biomarkers (VOCs), web-reported symptoms).
He has been Principal- and co-investigator of many clinical trials since 2003. Prof. Scherpereel has presented over 100 communications in international meetings, and he has authored and co-authored more than 150 original publications in peer-reviewed journals, including many internationally known publications.
The ceremony for the Gold Medal in Lung Cancer will take place during the Opening Session, taking place on Saturday 28 September, 2019 from 17.45
